King Leonidas of Sparta

Hand-carved stone sculpture.

King Leonidas I references the Spartan king as a symbol of discipline, endurance and sacrifice rather than as a literal portrait.

The work draws on classical influence while allowing the weight and resistance of stone to shape the final form, reinforcing ideas of strength, restraint and resolve.

Rather than pursuing polished idealisation, the sculpture retains evidence of hand-carving and material resistance. Surface texture and tool marks remain visible, grounding the figure in process and physical labour rather than mythology alone.

Carved entirely by hand, King Leonidas I is conceived as a singular object rather than part of a series.
