The Violin

Hand-carved stone sculpture with integrated found materials.

The Violin explores the relationship between sound, form and material by combining carved stone with elements taken from a violin.  These include wood and strings.

By integrating these delicate components into stone the work brings together fragility, permanence, movement and stillness.

The stone is carved by hand to support and frame the instrument’s elements, allowing the contrast between materials to remain visible and unresolved.

The tension between the precision of the violin and the resistance of stone emphasises the transformation of an object associated with music and ephemerality into something physically grounded and enduring.

Surface texture and tool marks are retained within the stone, reinforcing process and human involvement.

Carved by hand and conceived as a singular work, The Violin is not part of a series.
