The Egyptian Cartouche

Hand-carved stone sculpture.

An Egyptian cartouche is an ancient symbol of protection and identity, traditionally used to enclose the names of pharaohs and deities in hieroglyphic form. Its oval shape, bound by an unbroken line, was believed to safeguard the name within for eternity.

This piece draws on that enduring symbolism. Hand-carved in stone, the cartouche becomes both object and vessel — a frame that speaks of permanence, legacy and the human desire to be remembered. The weight and materiality of the stone echo the original purpose of the cartouche: to endure long beyond the moment of its making.

As with all works by Artistry in Stone, the carving embraces imperfection, tool marks and the natural character of the material, allowing the piece to sit between history and contemporary form.

Carved entirely by hand, The Egyptian Cartouche is conceived as a singular object rather than part of a series.
